Reclaiming Your Storage: Introducing Trellik for Apple Silicon

When a drive fails or files vanish, macOS users are often forced to juggle multiple specialized tools. You might use Disk Utility for a basic check, a third-party application for deleted file carving, and a command-line tool to inspect S.M.A.R.T. health data. Worse, traditional repair utilities carry a high risk: they write fixes directly to the failing volume, potentially destroying the very data you are trying to rescue.

Trellik is a native macOS disk utility designed to change this. Built exclusively for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 (Sequoia), Trellik unifies filesystem repair, data recovery, hardware diagnostics, and predictive failure analysis into a single guided workflow: diagnose → repair → recover → verify.

What is Trellik?

Trellik is a professional-grade, Apple Silicon-optimized disk toolkit. Built using a high-performance Swift + Rust hybrid architecture, the app handles low-level raw disk operations safely and efficiently. By leveraging macOS Sequoia APIs, Apple Intelligence, and modern APFS capabilities, Trellik offers non-destructive repair sandboxes and local machine-learning failure predictions.

Key Capabilities

  • Filesystem Repair & Validation:
    • APFS Deep Validation: Validates container integrity, checksums, object maps, extent trees, and snapshot metadata, checking deeper than standard First Aid.
    • HFS+ Directory Rebuild: Reconstructs catalog B-trees from raw leaf nodes with visual previews (for external drives).
    • Partition Recovery: A visual, GUI-driven partition table scanner to locate and restore deleted GPT and MBR partitions.
  • Unified Data Recovery:
    • Deleted File Scan: Restores files directly from filesystem metadata.
    • Signature-Based File Carving: Extracts files from raw sectors using file signatures, featuring inline thumbnails and hex previews.
    • Recovery Vault: An opt-in, background daemon that monitors file deletions to facilitate instant recovery.
    • Cross-Filesystem Compatibility: Recovers data from APFS, HFS+, exFAT, FAT32, and read-only ext4 (Linux) volumes.
  • Hardware Diagnostics & Monitoring:
    • NVMe S.M.A.R.T. Dashboard: Tracks wear leveling, write amplification, spare blocks, and thermal throttling.
    • Endurance Tracking (TBW): Monitors Total Bytes Written against manufacturer limits, replacing obsolete physical surface scans for modern solid-state drives.
    • Menubar Status Widget: Provides real-time drive health monitoring, temperature status, and custom alerts.
  • Advanced Disk Operations:
    • APFS-Aware Volume Cloning: Clones volumes while preserving APFS snapshots and space sharing.
    • Secure Erase: Performs cryptographic erasure via Secure Enclave key destruction for internal SSDs, NVMe format commands for external SSDs, and multi-pass overwrites for legacy external HDDs.
    • Bootable Recovery Builder: Creates utility USB drives containing Trellik alongside macOS Recovery, pre-configured for Apple Silicon boot sequences.

Groundbreaking Novel Features

Trellik introduces capabilities never before seen in macOS disk utilities:

  • Predictive Failure Engine (Core ML): Runs a local machine learning model on the Apple Neural Engine to analyze S.M.A.R.T. trends. It calculates drive failure probability over 30/60/90 days without sending your telemetry data to the cloud.
  • AI-Assisted Diagnosis (Apple Intelligence): A natural language interface that accepts descriptions like "My external drive is clicking and slow" and automatically suggests the appropriate diagnostic course of action.
  • APFS Repair Sandbox (Dry-Run): Performs repairs on temporary APFS virtual clones and snapshots. You can preview the repaired filesystem and verify files before committing any writes to the physical source disk.
  • Filesystem Diff Engine: Compares two APFS snapshots or points in time to display exactly which files were modified, deleted, added, or suffered metadata changes.
  • Composite Drive Health Score: A drive-type-aware score from 0 to 100, adjusting weights depending on whether the drive is internal NVMe storage or external media.
  • Headless CLI (trellik): A fully-featured command-line companion allowing developers and sysadmins to script disk repairs and exports.

System Requirements

  • Operating System: macOS 15.0 (Sequoia) or later.
  • Hardware Support: Exclusively compiled for Apple Silicon Macs (M1 through M5 families, arm64 only).
  • Permissions Required: Full Disk Access (TCC) to enable volume scanning and low-level block reads.
